Formula
- Trade value = Price × Quantity
- Per-side cost = Flat fee + Trade value × (Commission % ÷ 100)
- Total cost = Per-side cost × (Round trip ? 2 : 1)
- Break-even move = Total cost ÷ Quantity
How it works
Transaction costs quietly erode returns, especially for active strategies. This tool sums commission (a percentage of trade value) and any flat per-order fee, optionally for a full round trip (entry plus exit).
The break-even move is the part traders forget: the price must move at least this far in your favor just to cover costs before any profit. Frequent trading multiplies this drag.
Costs are entered by you and vary by broker and instrument. This is an arithmetic estimate for planning, not advice and not a quote from any broker.
Example use cases
Round-trip on a $1,000 trade
10 units at $100, 0.1% commission + $1 flat per side, round trip → $4 total, break-even move $0.40 (0.4%).
Single order
Same inputs without round trip → $2 cost for the one side.
Frequently asked questions
Should I include both entry and exit?+
If you want the full cost of a complete trade, enable round trip — it doubles the per-side cost to cover both entry and exit. For a single order, leave it off.
Are taxes or exchange fees included?+
Only what you enter. Many venues add exchange, regulatory, or tax charges; fold them into the commission or flat fee to approximate the true cost.
